Turf Insects

Bill Bug damage is caused by this little pest. The adult is a actual bug with a bill type sucking mouth part; but the real damage is done by the pest during the larvae stage as this little guy chews off the Blue Grass root a few inches under the soil.

Diagnosis is simply lifting pulling on the turf which will rip up like carpet.

Turf insect have a very set cycle dependent upon temperatures; especially the ambient temperature in the soil.

Timing is crucial to treatment in that in most cases a systemic (insecticide is absorbed by the plant root before the insect begins feeding on the root) needs to be applied so it has been absorbed by the plant.

In the case of Bill Bug prevention late May to early June is often preferable.

Keep an eye on the IFAlawncare.blogspot.com site for information on the best time to apply.

Always read the label of all insecticides and use as directed
