Tree Insects

Tree Insects

Insect in trees is easier to diagnose than diseases.

Many insects are easily seen and diagnosed such as these Aphids.

There are many varieties of aphids but most can be controlled by the same insecticide. Always read and follow the insecticide label.

Other insects bore into the trunk of the tree making them more difficult to control.
Bore holes create obvious damage as they enter the tree.
Other examples may be frass or sap coming out of the holes.

Often it is necessary to do a systemic (in the trees vascular system) injection to stop the damage. This can be done with a soil drench or directly into the vascular system.

Maple Scale is another common problem. In order to determine the best time to attempt control, you must determine when the scale is in its most vulnerable stage. For most scale insects, this is directly after egg hatch when the crawlers begin searching for feeding sites, but before they begin producing their protective cover.
